Lonach is looking for a new secretary to lead the company

The Lonach Highland and Friendly Society, which hosts the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games, is looking for someone to fill the vacancy after the current secretary announced his intention to step down after 12 years in the post.

Current secretary Jennifer Stewart took office in 2009, becoming the first woman to hold the post.

Held annually on the fourth Saturday in August, the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games are the main event that the secretary is responsible for planning and organizing. It is one of Aberdeenshire’s main traditional summer events, welcoming up to 10,000 people to the village of Strathdon in Bellabeg to witness the unique Lonach Highlanders March.

Along with the annual gathering, the secretary is also responsible for organizing the family ceilidh on the evening of the gathering, a ball the following week, and an AGM and dinner held annually in December.

In addition, they manage the company’s marketing, promotion and online presence, and oversee the overall administration of the organization and communication with its 220 members and other relevant stakeholders. Compensation for the position would be discussed with the successful candidate.

Founded in 1823, the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2023, with the new secretary playing a key role in planning the celebration of this milestone.

The company was established to promote the benevolence and preservation of the Gaelic language. Today, it continues to provide financial assistance to its elderly members while supporting local community projects. In recent years, he has supported the installation of a defibrillator at Lonach Hall, the modernization of the Strathdon Primary School playground, a children’s summer club and plans to modernize the playground at Bellabeg.
