Find your outdoor club and group in Billings
Montana is known for its majestic mountains, lovely rivers, towering cliffs, and peaceful prairies. Living here is what millions of people across the country dream of. However, our easy access to the outdoors is often taken for granted.
Not knowing where to find an adventure partner means it’s sometimes easier to just overlook the fact that we live in Montana’s Trailhead and spend our time within the confines of society and development.
I’m here to help you change that. Discover your passion and let it blossom, because if you’re into it, there’s probably a band for it here in Billings.
Get high and climb something
I know marijuana is legal in Montana, but that’s not the high I’m talking about. If that’s your bag, then I suggest you wait until after the climb.
Instead, I’m talking about climbing cliffs and mountains and even just the Rims that surround Billings. We have one of the most unique geological structures that runs along our city. It’s the perfect place to grab some climbing gear and strengthen your upper body.
To verify steep world to learn the tricks of the trade, then hit the Steepworld Group or the Billings Climbing Group on Facebook to find your climbing partner.
Jump on the Yellowstone River and float
One of the country’s most pristine rivers runs through our backyard. Yes, yes, it’s a little murky and doesn’t look like a crystal clear mountain stream, but the water is actually quite clean and the Yellowstone River itself is amazing.
As the weather gets warmer, it will be more and more tempting to get in the cool water. And you don’t have to go it alone!
Friday night floats launches every Friday in the summer. A large group of rafters, kayakers, paddleboarders or just people who want to dive into an inner tube and drift downstream are welcome.
Find your off-road jeep trail
There are some who want to be on the water and others who prefer to stay on land. Why not see the world from off-road?
You don’t necessarily need a Jeep to join the Magic City 4×4 Group, but you have to have the passion to explore the world in a way that most people will never be able to. There are casual get-togethers, and I’m sure they take bigger trips every year.
Land a Lunker on a fly rod
With Montana being a global fly fishing destination, it’s no surprise that there are a handful of Montana-wide groups dedicated to the sport.
Swing to the Montana Fishing Addicts 2.0 page if you are only passionate about fishing; not specifically into the fly rod thing. Or press the Montana Fly Fishing Group if you want to focus primarily on this art form. Since joining groups is free, you might as well do both if you’re a fly fisherman.
A hyperlocal Billings fly fishing group would be a great place to start if you dream of a community here in town.
Put your steps in a hike
Ever since FitBit started tracking where we are going, people have been obsessed with their step count. I am too, don’t get me wrong. I’m on a 130+ day streak of 10,000+ steps.
But these stages are so much more exciting when you’re on a nearby hiking trail, discovering new areas, visiting new sites, and experiencing Montana up close and personal.
Whether you want to hike just outside of town at Zimmerman Park on the Rims or head to the Beartooths, you can get your beta and find your clan with the Billings Area Hiking Club.
Pedal power around Billings
Gasoline prices are almost double what they were a year or two ago. This means that even a short trip around town saves you a lot of money if you pedal instead of drive it.
Of course, biking isn’t just about utility. Seeing Billings on a bike is also a great pastime. And that’s what the Billings Bike Group is all about. You don’t have to be a super athlete, just love riding a bike.
As a resident of Billings, what is your passion for the outdoors?
Social media has made it very easy for people to get together, find their teams, and socialize offline. Maybe your passion already has a club formed around it. Perhaps your passion is relatively unrecognized. Maybe the rest of Billings are waiting for you to step in and form one of those bands that brings people together in the most outdoorsy way?
Maybe I forgot a club or group, and you want to publicly shame and humiliate me. I agree with that. Let us know what your favorite band is that we haven’t mentioned here.
