Hindu groups protest in Shahbagh to demand justice

ISKCON chief calls for separate commission to protect minorities

Leaders and supporters of 40 minority organizations have called on the government to end the culture of impunity for perpetrators of community attacks.

Protesters staged a rally in Shahbagh Chattar in the afternoon under the banner of Sammilito Sanatan Parishad. They then released a torchlight procession to the National Press Club in the evening.

Speakers at the rally demanded severe penalties for those involved in the series of attacks on Hindu temples, places and homes in Durga Puja in more than 20 districts since October 13.

They demanded the formation of a special tribunal and a separate commission to protect minorities.

ISKCON chairman Satya Ranjan Baroi warned that they would continue the protests until the government convicted those responsible.

He lamented that the government had taken no action to bring to justice those responsible for previous attacks on minorities.

During the wave of violence that began on October 13, a mob in Chowmuhani led by Begumganj Upazila marched along College Road and DB Road and vandalized an ISKCON temple and other establishments in the area.

A Hindu man, Jatan Kumar Saha, 42, has died in the violence. The body of another person, Pranto Das, was recovered from a pond next to the temple the next day.
