European Club Association names PSG’s Nasser Al-Khelaifi as president

What did Al-Khelaïfi say?

Upon his appointment, he said, “I am humbled and honored to have been nominated as Chair by my fellow members of the ECA Governing Council.

“The leadership, integrity and cohesion of our organization have never been more necessary than at this pivotal moment in European football. I will provide my unconditional commitment to the entire football community: that is say to all ECA member clubs from all European nations, and to the supporters and communities they represent.

“Alongside all my fellow ECA Board members and clubs, I seek to strengthen ECA in its role as the legitimate and singular voice of European clubs. Our game, loved by generations of supporters, does not only thrive in unity, and it is our duty as the guardians of football to fulfill that obligation.”

What did the ECA say?

A statement read: “Following the unprecedented events of recent days which have seen attempts to undermine the whole of the European football community, the ECA – representing Europe’s leading football clubs – welcomes the decision of its former member clubs not to proceed with their so-called ‘Super League’ project, following seismic and universal condemnation of the project by the entire football community and across society at large.

“The ECA strongly believes that this project could not succeed because football, at its core, is based on openness, sporting excellence and an inherent bond between all members of the football family.

“Football is for everyone. Recent events have reminded us that club owners are only guardians of their clubs, which are historic beacons that mean so much to fans and their communities.

“ECA believes that it is the responsibility of each member club to ensure that we develop the game of football and leave it in a better place for the next generation; not to dismantle it just for financial gain.
