Dr Disrespect has started laying the groundwork for a long hiatus from streaming, twice admitting he’d rather step away from his main gig to work on Midnight Society – his new development studio – and his growing stable of games rather than continuing to grind “aimless” streams.
“I’m really considering taking a year or two to make this game,” he said.
Doc’s shock interrupt bomb – keep talking, remember, for now – came as he fell in war zone for nearly six hours live on July 14.
He had opened his broadcast on YouTube with a passage on PUBGbut soon found himself with “nothing to play” apart from the Call of Duty battle royale, which he has castigated as a mainstay in office in recent months. When longtime winger TimTheTatman joined him, Dr Disrespect broke the news: a break is on the cards.
“I was sitting in my command center thinking, what am I going to play?” he explained to his Champions Club viewers in his YouTube chat room. “That’s what the gaming industry is to me right now. I’m in one of those spells.
The hiatus would last until around early 2024, the streamer believes.
Stepping away from his YouTube program would hurt the Google-owned site’s twice-over revenue and growing popularity, but it would give Dr Disrespect – or rather the man under the mask, Guy Beahm – the chance to really leave his mark on his new studio. He last worked in gaming at Sledgehammer Games, where he led the design of a handful of Advanced Warfare multiplayer maps.
“I plan a year or two of rest, then to come back. Yeah. For the full and complete game, it will be a two-year schedule, I think. It’s a big game of vision, on a grand scale.
Talk of a years-long hiatus from YouTube streaming comes days after Dr Disrespect said the industry had “lost its way” with new releases.
In a classic Doc rant, the game twice drove him crazy.
“I’m going crazy with our selection of games in the industry,” the oft-controversial YouTuber said. “You know? I’m going crazy. I don’t see anything on the horizon either that gives hope. Genuinely. Where is the games? It’s a 120 billion dollar industry. You’re telling me that I have nothing to play?
“It just doesn’t make sense,” Dr. Disrespect added in the July 12 stream. ” This is not the case. We have nothing to play. I hear nothing and I see nothing coming.
The cogs are turning in Midnight Society right now and will continue to turn for the next 24 months, whether the Doc joins his team full-time or stays on stream. More recently, the studio announced Project Moon is a “vertical extraction shooter” in the same vein as Escape from Tarkovwith a few more floors.
Access to early testing is available through NFTs, which cost $50 each.
Dr Disrespect has been very clear that he wants players to be involved in Project Moon from the beginning and provide feedback on weapons, maps, recoil, balance, reloading, and accuracy.
He explained, “We’re not backed by a AAA publisher with hundreds of millions and we don’t have the luxury of going behind a curtain for two or three years. [Midnight Society] takes a different response with what we need to work with and we try to take a unique approach with the community.
Avid gamers and Dr Disrespect fans interested in Project Moon and Midnight Society can meet the featured streamer and talk shop at a “Founder’s Event” on Friday, July 29.
