Best European club organization opposes biennial World Cup

Pressure from FIFA to double the frequency of the World Cup every two years has caused a setback across Europe.

The European Association of Clubs, a body representing 234 clubs, issued a statement on Friday condemn the proposal and efforts to promote it.

“FIFA’s proposals would lead to a direct and destructive impact on club play, both nationally and internationally,” ECA said. “In addition, the proposals would endanger the health and well-being of the players. “

The ECA said FIFA was trying to “push forward” the idea and that it “diluted the value and significance of club and country competitions” and “decrease and conflict with women’s and youth football. “

European football governing body UEFA and CONMEBOL in South America also oppose the idea. UEFA oversees the European Cup every four years, which is scheduled to fall between the World Cups. Both organizations threatened to boycott additional World Cups.

  • The World Cup is by far the main driver of FIFA’s revenue.
  • Organization earned $ 6.4 billion from 2017 to 2020, of which more than 70% in 2018 when Russia hosted the quadrennial tournament.

The World Cup cost Russia around $ 14 billion, but added $ 15 billion to its economy.

Qatar expects an economic boost of $ 20 billion by hosting the 2022 World Cup.
